Idris Elba read out a very special letter to one award winner at the Pride of Britain Awards, which aired on ITV on Thursday (27 October).

The star was presenting the Pride of Britain’s Prince’s Trust Award on stage to Alex Anderson, when he paused to read out a letter of congratulations from The King.

His Majesty began by saying he wished to send his, “warmest congratulations to Alex on being this year’s Pride of Britain Prince’s Trust award winner,” describing his experience as “an inspirational story of triumph over adversity that shows how tenacity, courage and hard work can make even the most impossible dream come true.”

A post on the official Royal Family social media account explained that Alex is, “one of the first people with Asperger’s syndrome to join the Royal Air Force. He has also done 1,000 hours of volunteering work.”

While he was the Prince of Wales, His Majesty founded the Prince’s Trust to help young people develop skills and confidence to find work and start businesses.

In his letter, he said that he was, “enormously proud of the part the Prince’s Trust has played in helping him achieve his ambition to serve our nation, and so impressed to hear how he is now assisting others in the community, both young and old.”

The King finished his letter by addressing all of those at the awards that evening, saying, “I am full of admiration for you all and congratulate each one of this year’s winners on their extraordinary achievements. You are truly the Pride of Britain.”

The full letter can be read on the Royal Family’s Instagram account.

Idris Elba is an alumnus of the Prince’s Trust and now one of its ambassadors, making him the perfect choice to deliver the special message at the awards.
