Just like the rest of us, Hugh Grant loves a good yarn about quirky celebrity behaviour - and they don’t get much odder than his theory on George Clooney’s sleeping arrangements.

The Notting Hill star has heard a rumour that Hollywood A-lister Clooney turns down the many spacious rooms in his mansion to sleep in a cupboard every night, and it sounds like he’d love it to be true.

Explaining the reasoning to The Daily Mail, he said: “I love the theory I have heard that people who suddenly get well-known stick emotionally, in terms of their personality, at the moment at which they get famous.

“They can't move on from it. I've heard stories that George Clooney, in his vast mansion, still sleeps in the closet, because he was sleeping in a very small apartment when he got famous.”

Clooney, 59, lives in a sprawling Oxfordshire countryside mansion with his human rights lawyer wife Amal and their three-year-old twins.

Meanwhile, Grant, 60, applied the same theory to himself.

The dad of five lives with his wife Anna Eberstein, but keeps on a London flat that he first owned aged 34.

He said: “I'm talking to you now from the flat I had at that time and which I've never sold, because I like to run away here to work.

“I feel safe here. Well, you know, around the corner, I've got five screaming children and a whole other life.”

Grant has three children with wife Eberstein, and two others from a previous relationship with Tinglan Hong.

Clooney recently spoke about lockdown life and how many chores he had taken on around the home without his usual help available.

He told CBS: “It’s been a while since I did 15 loads of laundry in a day and mopped floors.

“I always say I felt like my mother in 1964, because she had two kids and no help. And I don’t know how she did it now. I have more sympathy for her now than ever.”
