Matthew McConaughey has confirmed his 88-year-old mother is due to go on a date with Hugh Grant's 91-year-old father next week after The Gentlemen stars previously proposed matchmaking their parents.

In an interview with Mashable last month, McConaughey joked about getting his mother Mary Kathlene McCabe together with James Grant and now it seems as though the two will actually be meeting.

"His father's 91, my mother's 88," McConaughey told Entertainment Tonight in an update on the situation. "Yeah, why not?"

“Next week, they're supposed to meet, and we probably won't see them for the rest of the night," he jokingly added.

McConaughey's father Jim McConaughey, who died in 1992, had an on and off relationship with McCabe. The pair were married a total of three times to each other, with McConaughey being conceived shortly after the third wedding.

Meanwhile, Grant's mother Finvola Grant passed away in 2001 at the age of 67 from pancreatic cancer, making his father a widower.

Grant was formerly renowned for being a long-time bachelor however he's now settled down with wife Anna Eberstein. In addition, he's a father to five children, sharing three with Eberstein and two with former partner Tinglan Hong.

He's recently shared that he was "plain wrong" about his previous views on marriage and family, saying he had put off family life "for too many decades".

The Love Actually star shared: “Well, I was just plain wrong. I was wrong. And children, you know, I used to roll my eyes. People would say, 'Oh Hugh you don't understand it', but they were right.”
