Hugh Bonneville has confirmed that filming for Downton Abbey 2 is officially underway.

The actor - who is reprising his role as Lord Grantham - posted a picture of himself in front a framed photo of the cast, and held two fingers up to signal the second installment.

"Good to be back. #DowntonAbbey2," Hugh tweeted.

Downton Abbey's official Twitter account also confirmed that the cast and crew had reunited for filming, and that Dominic West was joining the cast. Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, and Nathalie Baye have also been confirmed new cast members.

"We're thrilled to announce that Julian Fellowes and the entire Downton cast are back for #DowntonAbbey2, with Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye and Dominic West joining! See the film in theatres this Christmas."

Hugh recently revealed that he had seen a script for the sequel and there was every intention to make it - once the cast and crew are vaccinated.

"Here’s the deal, if everybody who is offered a vaccine takes a vaccine, we can make a movie, we will make a movie," he told Zoe Ball on her radio show earlier this year.

He also added that another Downton film would provide fans with some much-needed light relief to counteract the ongoing challenges and uncertainty of Covid-19.

"We would love to do it, we are desperate to do it, and I think it’s the sort of pleasurable release of a movie like the first one was, that audiences would enjoy after all of this mess we have been through," he concluded.

Set in 1927, the first Downton Abbey film centered around the Crawleys as they prepared for a visit from royalty. There were plenty of storylines and character arcs that were left open, such as did Laura Carmichael's Edith safely deliver her baby? And how is Michelle Dockery's Mary handling running the estate on her own?

Returning cast members include Laura Carmichael, Michelle Dockery, Allen Leech, Joanne Froggatt, Jim Carter, Robert James-Collier, Penelope Wilton and Elizabeth McGovern.

Downton Abbey 2 will be released in cinemas across the UK at Christmas.
