Cellulite is a common skin condition, that both men and women suffer from.
While harmless and not a reflection of your overall health, it can be frustrating and cause many people to search for solutions to rid themselves of it.
It’s a very common complaint, aesthetic dermatologist Dr. Tatiana tells Yahoo UK.
“It’s typically described as dimpled or bumpy skin and is often seen around the thighs and buttocks but can also be seen on the breasts, upper arms and lower abdomen.
“There are three grades of ‘severity’: mild (Grade 1), moderate (Grade 2) and severe (Grade 3), and they relate to the number and depth of dimples seen.”
The causes of cellulite are not entirely understood. “We do know that fibrous bands form between the skin and the underlying connective tissue and muscle,” says Dr. Tatiana.
“These bands separate pockets of fat and tether the skin surface down to the deeper structures, creating a dimple.
Oestrogen hormone appears to be an important factor in the development of cellulite, she adds.
“We know this because women are more prone to cellulite than men and we only see cellulite after the onset of puberty.
“In addition to oestrogen, other factors such as genetics, weight, muscle tone, age, pregnancy, a high-fat or high-carbohydrate diet, smoking and sedentary lifestyle, have all been implicated in the development of cellulite.
“However, anyone can get cellulite, even if they are young, slim and in optimal health.”
There are home remedies, vitamins and even some clothing that can be used to reduce the appearance of cellulite, Dr. Tatiana explains.
She recommends trying products with specific ingredients, such as Vitamin A and caffeine in to reduce the appearance of cellulite.
