How to dress for the cold: 6 stylish ways to stay warm and cozy this winter
Our favorite frigid-weather gear includes exactly zero puffer coats that will leave you looking like the Michelin Man.
As someone who has spent her whole life in the Northeast (and still calls it home), I thought I had mastered the art of dressing for winter. However, everything changed when I welcomed a rescue pup into my life two years ago. Suddenly, braving the elements for long walks and outdoor playtime became a regular part of my routine, and I realized how tough the cold can really be. No longer could I just throw on my coat and dash to my car; I found myself navigating icy winds, playing fetch in freezing temperatures and shivering during the dog's morning bathroom breaks.
So trust me: I've learned a thing or two about staying cozy on cold days. With winter still going strong, I want to share some friendly trips and tricks that have helped me stay warm. Yes, investing in a good winter coat is key, but so is layering with lightweight pieces and swapping my regular leggings for comfy fleece-lined versions. Keep scrolling for more ways to stay toasty all season long.
Need more guidance on how to prep your home for extreme weather or keep cold drafts out of your house? We've got you covered there too.
1. Invest in a durable winter coat
When it comes to braving chilly winter days, a sturdy winter coat is key. If you're in a cold climate, pick a coat that's not just warm but windproof. You should also look for functional features like a cozy storm hood, roomy pockets and a soft fleece lining. One of my all-time favorites is this insulated parka from Fjallraven — it's one of the warmest coats I've ever had, and I reach for it all winter long. Another fave? This Patagonia parka that's actually three jackets in one. If you're looking for a more budget-friendly topper, thousands of Amazon shoppers (and Oprah!) say you can't go wrong with the internet-famous Orolay. 2. Stock up on cozy socks
If you have poor circulation like I do, you know how important warm socks can be. Cozy Earth makes some of my favorite socks. They have a thick, plush feel but are breathable, so they keep my feet warm, not hot and sweaty. They also have a seamless toe and cushioned heel for extra comfort. Looking for a more affordable pick? Yahoo readers can't get enough of the wool socks from BomKinta and Justay. And if your tootsies need even more warmth, check out our guide to the best heated socks.

3. Stop losing your gloves
We've all been there: You reach into your pocket for your gloves, and there's only one. That's why I've been loving my Glider Gloves for those daily dog walks. They're touchscreen compatible, so I can check my phone without taking them off, and the anti-slip grippers keep them securely in my pocket. Now, if I'm heading outdoors for a bit longer, I like to layer Krosa Ski Gloves on top for some extra warmth. They're super cozy and come with a buckle that lets me attach them to my coat. Another fave is this pair from The North Face; they have these clips on the sides that make it easy to keep them together when I'm not using them. 4. Snap up lightweight layering pieces
Lightweight layers are necessary for those tricky days when it's cold in the morning but milder later in the day. One of my go-to layers is this tissue-thin turtleneck from J.Crew. I'm able to tuck it into jeans, dress pants and skirts without any bunching, and it can be layered under button-ups, cardigans and pullover sweaters for added warmth without any bulk. A cozy shacket and fleece tops are other great layering pieces to have in your rotation.

5. Swap out your regular leggings for fleece-lined options
As much as I love my Lululemon Align leggings, the wind cuts right through them on super cold days. So I've been looking for thicker fleece-lined options to wear instead. Commerce Contributor Libby Sentz recommends this Iuga pair, saying "These svelte little leggings let me move unencumbered and stay warm!" Other popular pairs on Amazon include bestselling, affordable options from Baleaf and Thermajane.

6. Step into waterproof boots
If you've ever trudged through the snow or stepped into a hidden puddle of slush while wearing Uggs or sneakers, I feel your pain. But you'll never have to deal with soggy, cold feet anymore if you upgrade to a pair of waterproof boots. Baffin Chloe boots are my personal life-saver. They're always right by my front door, and it's super easy to slip them on and off. If you're planning a winter hiking adventure or just love long walks in the snow, waterproof Keen hiking boots are a fantastic choice too. And these insulated Sorel boots were a game-changer for our Senior Beauty Editor, Jennifer Romolini, during her month-long trip to Iceland.
