How To Do A Subtle Smokey Eye Right

Sometimes I wonder if growing up with two brothers having a vast knowledge of Kung Fu movies and sports trivia has somehow drained my ability to perform basic girl tasks.

I remember watching my friends in high school apply mascara in the bathroom like ballerinas preparing for a show, whereas I looked more like a drunk, overgrown toddler trying to face paint my own face.

Basically, makeup has never been my jam until I got into blogging and had the time to really focus on the basics of makeup application.

But even with the makeup skills I have recently nailed down, the smokey eye has always eluded me - no joke I practiced for almost a full day to get this post right. I found so many good guides online, but most of them didn’t specify brush needs or colors - I had to figure that out through trial and error.

So in order to save my fellow tomboys out there from crying until their mascara makes them look like a raccoon, here is how I do my subtle smokey eye.

STEP 1:

Start by highlighting the area just below your outer eyebrow in a white eyeshadow or something slightly darker if you are not as pale as me.

STEP 2:

Draw an oblong circle over your eye, starting from the inner eye and working your way out. I used a color just darker than my foundation and used the widest of my brushes.

STEP 3:

Using an angled brush, fill in the crease of your eyelid with a charcoal grey. Also line your upper and lower eyelid with the grey.

STEP 4:

By pulling very gently on your eyelashes, keep your lid taut while you draw a straight line with liquid eyeliner. Apply mascara as you normally would to your upper and lower lashes and allow to dry.
