A private house on the Sandringham Estate, owned by the Royal family, is now available to rent for short stays.

The closest property to the imposing Sandringham House, and formerly home to the late Queen Elizabeth II’s head gardener, the property is for rent through Norfolk Hideaways who are marketing it on holiday lettings site Airbnb.

Aptly named Garden House, the home for hire offers generous accommodation for eight. Four bedrooms upstairs can be arranged as super kings or twins, while the ground floor includes a sitting room, dining room, boot room, utility room and kitchen replete with Aga - all furnished with pieces from the Royal Collection.

A sunny breakfast room looks out onto the extensive grounds, which include an adjacent formal walled garden.

“The closest estate property to Sandringham House itself, [the property is] all about an appreciation of the great outdoors and the beautiful gardens it sits within,” says the advert.

The 600-acre estate has traditionally served as host for the Royal Family’s Christmas celebrations, with a Christmas Day mass held at its St. Mary Magdalene Church each year.

Though the property will appeal to those eager to experience a slice of royal life, there is plenty to please any holidaymaker in the locality.

Sandringham is a short drive from some of Norfolk’s most compelling coastline, including Snettisham, the county’s only west-facing beach. It’s also an area popular with birdwatchers, who flock to this stretch of the shore to spot waders and wildfowl.

Amanda Cupples, Airbnb’s General Manager for Northern Europe says: “We are delighted that the Garden House [...] is now available to book on Airbnb. This picturesque cottage set in the grounds of one of [the Royal family’s] most beautiful estates is a perfect hideaway for guests looking for a truly unique stay.”

While the Monarch has use of a vast property portfolio, including Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the Sandringham Estate, the late Queen Elizabeth II increasingly used her beloved Balmoral as a primary base. On Tuesday, she elected to receive an incoming Prime Minister at the Aberdeenshire estate for the first time.

Airbnb launched its Historical Homes category in July in response to growing demand. In 2021, UK bookings for such properties on the site had increased by over 80 per cent compared to 2019.
