While new moons are generally invigorating, there’s something about the week following the last
new moon in Cancer that has many of us feeling like we’ve finished a triathlon. Invigorated? Maybe. Exhausted? Definitely. Perhaps it’s all those celestial squares we’re shrugging off, like Mercury square Neptune or Venus square Uranus, or the persistence of Saturn square Uranus. It's a lot. With the fog of Mercury’s retrograde shadow just barely behind us, our planet of travel, information, communication and connection finds itself under the sentimental stars of Cancer. Sentimental as in: of or prompted by feelings of tenderness, sadness, and nostalgia. Sentimental as in: against indifference; toward world-building, sensation, and consonance. Venus joins Mars at 19° Leo, putting our money and our actions where our heart is. You might be tired, reader, but you’re not out for the count — especially because you know that there are many ways to make an impact, even when you can’t make it to the gathering. The Sun in Cancer makes a trine to Neptune in Pisces and what connects us, keeps us afloat, is larger than our singular experience. Hold on to what holds you afloat. Like the forests, like the oceans, we exist in relation. Even our dreams intertwine. Aries Sun & Aries Rising While Mars in Leo hanging out with Venus in Leo might have you yearning for a wild time, the week following the Cancer new moon will be calling for a slower, more measured approach. It’s a good week to read the room, and if the room is far from packed and ready to go, you might as well find a comfortable seat. Chiron in Aries stations retrograde on the 15th, and if the trine to Venus in Leo intimated anything about the transit, it might be this: While the first cut is the deepest, it’s not the cut itself that wrecks us. Instead, it’s our refusal to accept how it governs us when we continually do the same thing, hoping for different results. When patterns persist, remind yourself: Breaking cycles is not easy, but you were born to do it. Illustration by Stefhany Lozano Taurus Sun & Taurus Rising It’s true that Cancer season can bring out the sentimental side in most of us, a reverence for deep and abiding connections we made so many Julys ago. With your ruling planet, Venus, alongside Mars in Leo, the importance of loving and being loved in turn could feel heightened. If you are the kind of Taurus that has felt torn between building relationships and building a personal future (a career, an audience, a place in the world), this week would be a great week to get clear on how much of that opposition is based on circumstance and how much of it is based on insecurities that belong to a person you might not even be anymore. Perhaps the possibility of building both is more available to you than you want to admit. Why is that? Illustration by Stefhany Lozano Gemini Sun & Gemini Rising The more time we spend with someone, or something, the closer we feel. An intimacy born out of attention and close regard is incredibly potent, even if it is an intimacy that is fleeting, that has no greater purpose than to be felt. Mercury’s arrival under the stars of Cancer could very well bring such intimacies to the surface, casting a warm, rosy glow onto whatever’s occupying you. This is a great week to dive deep and get familiar with a new creative passion or nurture a new connection. Mercury’s trine to Jupiter in Pisces the day following her ingress into Cancer can heighten your sense of interconnection and possibility. So long as you remember that what’s beautiful is also always fleeting, you’ll be set to get it while you can. Illustration by Stefhany Lozano Cancer Sun & Cancer Rising With how hard you work to take care of others, you deserve to take care of yourself from time to time. What better time to give yourself some attention than birthday time? It’s your solar return and you’ll shine if you want to, especially if it’s been a long time since you were in the mood to shine. Try to remember, dear Cancer, that while it’s easy to excuse big purchases and splurges this time of year, there are other ways of loving on yourself than spending more than you’ve got to spare. Give yourself time to yourself, long walks, laying in the sun. Celebration, especially with someone as relationship-oriented as you, can be a committee affair. Listen to the treasurer inside you and communicate her concerns, lest they become your resentments. Illustration by Stefhany Lozano Leo Sun & Leo Rising There’s nothing wrong with asserting yourself, with letting people know exactly where you stand, especially when you find yourself standing on opposite sides of an emotional river. Like most difficult things in life, it’s not the what of the matter, it’s the how. Letting those you care about in on your emotional experience can be a difficult negotiation, especially if you’re not sure how much you really care at all. A good rule of thumb when it comes to internal conflict is noting how long you’ve been sitting on a feeling born out of an exchange. If it’s colouring your ability to relate, if it’s underpinning the way you react and respond, then it’s more likely to burn the bridge than flow under it. If you value the bridge, you’ll need help putting that fire out. Illustration by Stefhany Lozano Virgo Sun & Virgo Rising Would you believe that the more you delay your personal gratification in service to the team, the more services your team is likely to need? And, if you haven’t already, you’re much more likely to find yourself compensating — bingeing in the few moments of respite you find and waking up burnt out without satiation. If you haven’t already, this week is a great time to take some intentional time off. Set some boundaries around when and how you’re available to others. Protect your weekends. And, if you find yourself on the other side of vacation grinding hard to make up for lost days, be easy on those gears. Pace yourself. Besides, midnight oil doesn’t last forever and you were not meant to live all your days around deadlines. Illustration by Stefhany Lozano Libra Sun & Libra Rising What’s been moving over you and through you has been going on for quite some time. If you’ve been facing it head-on, if you’ve been making the necessary changes, you know that you’re not the same person you were three years ago. Still, life has to be lived before we know what it is and the lives we build along the way to our future selves are not lives that simply disappear. If you have found yourself at odds with aspects of your past, you have found the places where you are called to make new acquaintance with yourself. If you’re reluctant to share your journey with friends, ask yourself if you’re protecting what you’re slowly building within you, or if you’re afraid to let go of an identity that no longer fits. Illustration by Stefhany Lozano Scorpio Sun & Scorpio Rising With your traditional ruling planet, Mars, transiting Leo this month and touching Venus in Leo this week, you’re likely to feel a good deal of warmth — especially around connections you’ve made in your trade or profession. This warmth is a kind of welcome, an invitation to recognise that the work you do is deeply rooted in your relationship to others and the world you want to help build for them. Recognise it and then reshape that work to better fit your image. Mars is all about self-assertion and Venus is what you value. Under the stars of Leo, these two planets pack a powerful invocation. Whatever you call in, Scorpio, is sure to come knocking. So, be very intentional about what you call in — but not so intentional you let your chance pass by. Illustration by Stefhany Lozano Sagittarius Sun & Sagittarius Rising Old habits are hard to break — and when those habits are formed around money, it’s even harder. Sometimes these habits are our visible spending routines. Often, they’re less material, and certainly less logical. A culmination of beliefs about ourselves born of experience and upbringing — an inheritance and a faith system. What you might have found, in the past year, is that your faith system around finances is changing as your place in the world changes. For some of you, this might very literally be about new work and opportunities. For others, it has been a wider reimagining of what you need to feel secure in this world. Be gentle with yourself when old feelings that no longer reflect your circumstances seem to come up. Believing in something new takes time. Illustration by Stefhany Lozano Capricorn Sun & Capricorn Rising Capricorn babes can have a little date, as a treat. Wait, are we still saying “as a treat”? Capricorns know all about time and if the time for that joke and your solitude is past, then you’re most likely correct. The truth is, you could keep working on yourself forever, getting high (and dare I say… mighty?) off your commitment to personal development. But, there comes a time when the only thing that gets us past our pervasive and pesky patterns is another person. So, make a date, make more than one. Put yourself out there in a way that has nothing to do with playing it safe and everything to do with pushing your own boundaries. It’s okay to push just a little bit, Cappy. Even if it doesn’t work out, you get to widen the perimeter of your play. Illustration by Stefhany Lozano Aquarius Sun & Aquarius Rising While love is a measureless resource, your energy is not. This is a lesson you’re bound to find yourself learning repeatedly, a lesson only as difficult as your ability to accept it. When you find yourself fading into other people’s problems, you lose sight of the connection between you. The pull of the other — what they need, what you might be able to offer them, the quest to prove one’s preciousness — can feel like less of a wave and more of a riptide. There are, of course, activities available to you outside the water. Redirect your focus toward your side of the shore. Isn’t there something you were hoping to build in the near future? There are resources within your kinship systems that are ready to help when you’re ready to ask for it. Illustration by Stefhany Lozano Pisces Sun & Pisces Rising To make the dream work, you’ve got to do some team work — even if the team work in question is less about working directly with others and more about attending to all the mundane things that make collaboration possible and powerful. While it may not seem like it on the surface, your presence is integral to the creative world you are trying to be a part of, and it’s not enough for you to simply show up. You gotta give it as close to 100% as you can muster. If there’s something holding you back, this week is a great time to get clear on the *why* of it. While one would be a fool not to let the lessons of the past inform our future endeavors, one could miss out on a great many things by confusing past issues for present concerns.
