An industrial-style apartment by Weespaces
Weespaces designs an industrial-style apartment for a young couple in Hyderabad

This 3,200-square-foot, industrial-chic apartment in Hyderabad, is Vinithra Amarnathan’s lockdown baby. The project was commissioned to her Bengaluru-based design firm Weespaces right on the cusp of the 2020 pandemic. "We designed this entire home [including structural edits] remotely! It let us explore design in an uncompromised manner," says Amarnathan of the challenging yet fulfilling project.

The homeowners, a young couple who met in Spain, envisioned the space as an industrial-style loft with a vibrant twist. The resultant open-plan concept is a lesson in balance and contrasts. An edgy industrial palette of concrete and metal is softened with organic textures like wood, wicker and red brick. Voluminous spaces are punctuated by proportionately large-scale lighting fixtures and statement furniture – like a distressed turquoise sideboard in the formal living-dining area or the velvet sectional in the lounge. A cool grey and white shell is warmed up with the clients’ love of vibrant colour and pattern. Spanish art prints personalise just about every space; in the kitchen, this aesthetic takes the form of wall tiles.

The formal living room was reimagined as the home office. Its black metal-and-glass wall gives the adjoining slim entryway a sense of space. “One of my favourite spots, this home office is dressed in a light, airy material palette of concrete, natural wood, glass and metal,” says Vinithra.

Open-concept floor plans are common with the industrial style. Before you lay out the furniture, get the flow of traffic between spaces right! For instance, a distressed turquoise sideboard demarcates spaces in the formal living cum dining area.

In the formal living area, industrial concrete is warmed up with muted-Mediterranean tones seen in the soft furnishings and handprinted art from Antiques.

Exposed brick walls visually connect the dining area and open kitchen. The latter showcases bold blue-and-white tile, reminiscent of Spanish tiles, and deep-teal cabinetry.

The lounge is basic and comfy with an outsized teal-velvet sectional and a custom wood-and-brass media console.

The balcony shares the minimalist theme of the rest of the living spaces. Wooden beams and wicker furniture & accessories add a laidback warm appeal to the space.

The tone-on-tone home theatre features a mural of a scene from The Fight Club – one of the couple’s favourite films. Note the custom-made, 10-foot-long media console, which features a teak countertop and mesh doors.

The powder room makes a bold statement with vertical bead boarding and a botanical wallpaper. The cladding cleverly conceals a linen closet.

The master bedroom is striking with three-quarters of its walls fluted and painted black. Contrastingly, its upper third section is painted white. "We love how this visually expands the room and adds height," says Vinithra.
