Four in five UK homeowners have grand plans to makeover their property in 2021, with social media being a big influence for interior inspiration.

About 79% of homeowners have plans to tackle at least one task relating to improving their property over the course of the next 12 months, according to recent survey of 1,000 UK homeowners by DIY supplier SGS Engineering.

Nearly half (46%) said they have plans to make some decor changes to the interior of their home.

The most popular rooms for a 2021 makeover include the kitchen (16%), bathroom (15%) and the practical project of converting an existing room into a home office space (10%), the survey found.

With many Brits spending more time than ever looking at their screens, it’s no surprise a quarter of homeowners are drawing their inspiration from aspirational home imagery on social media sites such as Pinterest and Instagram.

Additionally, more than a quarter (27%) said they were inspired to set themselves a DIY goal after spotting interior inspiration in the homes of people on TV.

With the housing market in the UK currently working in the favour of homeowners, home improvements are at the top of the to-do lists of those looking for a change of scene in the coming months.

A fifth of homeowners want to improve their home in order to increase its value, and 14% want to make it “more desirable” to potential buyers.

Meanwhile, almost a third (32%) are keen to make a dent on renovations for themselves, having spent increased amount of time around the house during the COVID-19 pandemic, and being unable to ignore the jobs that needed fixing any longer.

With time outdoors often limited by lockdowns, outside space is an increasingly desirable feature in UK homes. As a result, a fifth of those lucky enough to boast gardens or yards plan to get them up to scratch in 2021, as well.

Manchester is set to be the 2021 DIY capital, with nearly nine in 10 (88%) homeowners in the city saying they would be using their spare time this year to fulfil home improvements.

London (87%), Glasgow (86%) Bristol (81%) and Nottingham (79%) made up the top five.
