This is now the go-to shoe for RW Gear Editor Kerry McCarthy, so it’s over to him: ‘I’m very much a middle of the pack runner and for me, there’s nothing this shoe can’t do. It has one of the best weight-to-cushioning ratios I’ve come across - when you hold it in your hand you think there won’t be much to it, but it offers excellent energy return off what is a moderately firm platform. The only problem is that I’ll wear them out quickly as I want to wear them for every session’.
If it ain’t broke
Other testers were also enamoured, with comments mostly focusing on the lack of fuss; the pleasingly minimal design; the adaptability over most types of runs; and the fact that they were able just to put the shoe on, forget it was there and get on with proceedings. The Rincon 2 is mostly the same as the first version but crucially has been made a little roomier, giving it wider appeal and also now suitable for long slow runs where your foot swells over time.
Meta Rocker and roll
One of the best features of any Hoka shoe is its ‘meta rocker’ tech – and no, that doesn’t mean an ironic AD/DC fan. It’s simply a reference to the curve or taper of the shoe towards the toe. On the Rincon 2, Hoka has tweaked its ‘early stage’ rocker, which means it begins to taper the cushioning and curve the toe upwards from further back under the ball of the foot. The effect is a smoother sensation and a greater sense of ease in getting up on your toes and accelerating. We didn’t notice a significant difference in the performance of the rocker but then, we were fans of version 1 as well. We’re delighted to report that Rincon 2 is every bit as fast, adaptable, cushioned and generally thrilling as the original.
A corker of a shoe that can be most things to most runners.
