There are so many brilliant upcycling projects to transform old furniture in your home into lovely new pieces.

And here we have a really simple craft project to give an old lamp a new lease of life with a smart new shade. We talk you through in step-by-step instructions how to recover a lampshade with new fabric. It's the perfect way to ensure all your interiors match, and save yourself a few pounds buying a new lamp!

This is a great project for beginner crafters – you don't need any specialist crafting equipment or previous experience. Soon you'll be recovering all your lamps in your new favourite fabrics!

TIP: Keep your fabric taut throughout sticking it to your lampshade, you don’t want to see any ripples in your fabric.

You will need:

  • Lampshade and base

  • Double-sided tape

  • Scissors

  • Fabric (approximately 30cm for a lampshade this size)

  • Ruler

How to make:

1. Lay the fabric flat on a table. Ensure that the top edge of the fabric is straight before you do this using a ruler as a guide and trimming down as necessary.

2. Align the top edge of the lampshade with one long edge of the fabric and match the edge of the lampshade to the edge of the fabric. Line up the overlap in the lampshade with the shorter edge of the fabric. Then roll the lampshade across the fabric until you get back to the overlap. Mark where the bottom of the lampshade hits in regular intervals along the fabric. Connect these points in a straight line with the ruler and cut along this line.

3. Take the double-sided tape run it along both top and bottom edges of the lampshade. Peel back the protective layer on the tape to reveal the sticky side.

4. Keeping the fabric wrong side up, align the top and bottom edges of the lampshade with the long edges of the fabric. Start 2cm in from the short edge of the fabric. (You’ll use this later to create a neat finish). Proceed to roll the lampshade along the fabric, taking your time as it’s important to keep the fabric taut so you don’t end up with any ripples.

5. Once you get to the end, add a further strip of double-sided tape to the wrong side of the shorter end of the fabric. Peel off the protective layer and stick the sticky side directly to the lampshade. On the other short end, fold the fabric over about 1cm and cut and stick another strip of tape along this folded edge. This now overlaps over the other edge and sticks on top of it.

Styling tip – lights can really transform a room, try to think about not only where you need a touch of light but a pop of colour too!
