Here's What Jeremy Renner Eats to Maintain His 'Hawkeye' Muscle

For Hawkeye and Mayor of Kingstown star Jeremy Renner, his rules for a healthy diet are pretty simple. “I just steer away from things that I love,” he jokes.

In a new Eat Like, the actor talked about what he eats in a given day, and gives some advice for people looking to get healthy themselves. He says his diet isn’t as much about weight as it is energy. “I’ve had very very strict diets on certain jobs, and as I’ve gotten older I just don’t have to be that strict.”

While filming for a television show or movie, he starts his day with egg whites, avocado, and a couple slices of bacon. Sometimes he adds in tomato slices as well. He says he doesn’t eat like that at home though, since he’s too busy making waffles for his daughter. Throughout the day, Renner says he snacks instead of having a full lunch. But when he does have lunch, he’ll have tuna or chicken and broccoli.

If he’s on set, Renner says he’ll have a lighter dinner so it doesn’t weigh him down. At home with his daughter, he says he has a bigger meal. “I’ll have the sort of caveman sort of meal then. Then I’m not hangry anymore,” he says.

For a cheat day, Renner has “anything I want.” Still, the one thing he avoids is donuts. “Somehow and someway, it’s burned into my brain that you have to run eight miles to burn off one donut. And I love donuts,” he says.

Regardless of what he’s eating in a given day though, Renner says staying hydrated is key. “I’ll take something called ‘Liquid IV’ which has potassium, and electrolytes and things like that. So you only need one of those, and it’s worth like four [water bottles].”

Even though he admits his diet really isn’t much of a day-by-day protocol, Renner still has some general words of advice for staying healthy. “If everything’s balanced, then you’re in some sort of harmony,” he says. “But if you have excess of anything, you have a great imbalance. Follow your heart, follow your body, listen to your body, and I think you’ll succeed.”
