We were all temporarily brought out of our lockdown misery earlier this month with the happy news that Princess Eugenie had given birth to a baby boy. She and husband Jack Brooksbank's new arrival is the ninth great-grandchild to Queen Elizabeth, and has signalled celebrations both within and externally to the royal family.

While the statement announcing the new baby's arrival shared a fair few details surrounding his birth, there was one thing we were kept in the dark about: his name.

However, that's no longer the case as the new parents have finally shared their little one's full name: August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

So sweet!

The announcement was made on Princess Eugenie's official Instagram account, alongside the first pictures to be shared of little August's face.

The caption reads, "We wanted to introduce you to August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.. 💙💙💙⁣ Thank you for so many wonderful messages. Our hearts are full of love for this little human, words can't express. We are excited to be able to share these photos with you.⁣

"📸 By our wonderful midwife. Thank you to the wonderful essential workers including our midwife who came to discharge our boy."

Announcing August's birth earlier this month, an official statement read: "Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie was safely delivered of a son today, 9th February 2021, at 0855hrs at The Portland Hospital. Jack Brooksbank was present. The baby weighs 8lbs 1oz.

"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke of York, Sarah, Duchess of York, and Mr and Mrs George Brooksbank have been informed and are delighted with the news.

"This is Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s first child, The Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York’s first grandchild, and the ninth great-grandchild for The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well."

With the name not initially announced, the general public happily began speculating, trying to predict what the newborn will be called.

While Philip topped the list of baby name predictions, August certainly seems to be a surprise.

Gambling company Betfair previously announced that the name Philip had surpassed the previous favourite, Arthur. Arthur has grown quickly in popularity as a baby name in recent years; it ranked 4th most common boy's name in 2019 according to the Office for National Statistics' (ONS) most recent data, with 4,211 babies being given the name that year. Philip, on the other hand, is less popular these days. It ranked 396th in 2019 according to ONS data, with just 110 babies being named Philip in 2019. Despite that, it was thought that the name may be used in tribute to Princess Eugenie's 99-year-old grandfather, Prince Philip.

These were the other favourite predictions for Eugenie's baby name, featuring many of the typical regal names that crop up every time a royal baby is born:

  1. Philip (4/1)

  2. Arthur (5/1)

  3. Godfrey (5/1)

  4. Henry (11/2)

  5. Thomas (8/1)

  6. Victor (9/1)

  7. George (12/1)

  8. Albert (14/1)

  9. Edward (14/1)

  10. Charles (14/1)

  11. Edmund (14/1)

  12. Jack (18/1)

  13. Frederick (25/1)

  14. Frances (25/1)

  15. James (33/1)

  16. William (40/1)

  17. Andrew (66/1)

Congratulations to the new family!
