Helena Bonham Carter emphasises that The Crown is just "a drama"

From Harper's BAZAAR

Helena Bonham Carter says The Crown has a “moral responsibility” to remind viewers that it is a drama, rather than historical fact.

Bonham Carter, who has been praised for her portrayal of Princess Margaret in series three and four, highlighted this after many called for a “health warning” for people watching the hit drama.

The actor told an official podcast for the show that there is an important distinction between “our version” and the “real version”, reports The Guardian.

“It is dramatised. I do feel very strongly, because I think we have a moral responsibility to say, ‘Hang on guys, this is not… it’s not a drama-doc, we’re making a drama.’ So there are two different entities,” Bonham Carter explained.

While talking about the show’s research by creator Peter Morgan, she said: “That is the proper documentary. That is amazing and then Peter switches things up and juggles.”

Many have critiqued the show’s historical accuracy. Culture secretary Oliver Dowden said he is planning to write to Netflix to request a disclaimer for the show, so viewers know not to misinterpret what they see.

“It’s a beautifully produced work of fiction, so as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that… Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live though these events may mistake fiction for fact,” Dowden told the Mail on Sunday.

Accused inaccuracies include the Queen being wrongly dressed for Trooping the Colour, Prince Charles' incorrect fishing technique and events surrounding the breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage.
