Helen Mirren's favourite shade is perfect for silver hair & cool tones
Helen Mirren always looks fabulous on the red carpet, no matter what she wears, but there's one particular hue which she comes back to again and again. The colour has now become a something of a signature shade for the actor - and for good reason.
Stepping out at the annual L'Oréal Paris Women of Worth Celebration in Hollywood on Thursday (21 November), Helen opted for a glam monochrome look in her favourite shade once again: lilac.
Helen's long sleeved, floor-skimming gown was a stunning shade of lavender and was bedazzled with shimmering sequins. To complete the look, Helen added a knotted clutch bag in the same stone.
The stunning dress is the latest in a long line of lilac and purple ensembles for the star and, as GH Fashion Director, Amanda Marcantonio explains, there's good reason for it.
"Lilac can get (unfairly) a bad rap for being ‘old lady-ish’. Remember Phyllis Pearce and her ‘purple rinse’ in Coronation Street? But actually, lilac looks particularly spectacular on grey or white hair," says Amanda. "Why? Because they share the same cool, icy tones, so naturally compliment each other very well. Grey or white hair acts as a neutral backdrop, creating an elegant but dramatic contrast for brighter colours. Take inspiration from Helen Mirren and give lilac a go - it’s chic, not shout-y, like other bright tones."
One of our favourite lilac looks from Helen was her fabulous look at the Golden Globe Awards in January - yes, the one with those statement sleeves which added bags of drama.
And of course, who could forget one of Helen's most stand-out looks of all time - lilac or not? The star hit headlines in 2023 when she arrived at the Cannes Film Festival in a stunning v-neck gown which she'd matched to a brand new hair do.
In a bold break from her trademark silver locks, Helen debuted a lilac and blue multi-coloured hair do for the occasion. Iconic.
