Dame Helen Mirren is unrecognisable in her latest film role, as first images of the star in character are released.

In the biopic, Helen plays the first female Prime Minister of Israel, Golda Meir and has been completely transformed to look just like the woman herself.

In the image released of Helen in character, she can be seen with dark grey hair, in a short sleeved cardigan and skirt. Standing in a dimly lit office and holding a lit cigarette and drink, her expression is somber. Looking closely, you can just about make out the actor behind the costume and make-up is Helen Mirren.

In a release, Helen said, “Golda Meir was a formidable, intransigent and powerful leader. It is a great challenge to portray her at the most difficult moment of her extraordinary life. I only hope I do her justice!"

Production has now begun on the film by Academy Award winner Guy Nattiv, who described himself as “an admirer of the great Helen Mirren.”

He added that she had, “melted so brilliantly into Golda Meir's character with incredible talent, intelligence, depth and emotion, doing justice to the richness and complexity of this incredible woman".

Helen Mirren will star alongside Camille Cottin (Call My Agent, Killing Eve, House of Gucci) who plays Lou Kaddar, Golda’s personal assistant and Rami Heuberger (Schlinder’s List) as Moshe Dayan.
