Dame Helen Mirren has been keeping herself busy during lockdown. The Oscar-winning actress has been spending her isolation time in Lake Tahoe building snowmen, squirrel spotting and, very kindly, treating us all to a Shakespeare sonnet from the comfort of our sofa. Now, Helen is encouraging us all to do our bit in helping to save the planet.
Yesterday, the self-proclaimed eco-warrior posted a lovely photo of herself cleaning up the beaches in Nevada, near where she lives. Wearing a white puffer jacket, protective face mask and brandishing all the necessary gear, Helen can be seen heroically holding her litter picker up in the air.
"Eco Warrior! Clean up at Nevada Beach, with the great people of the League to save Lake Tahoe KEEP TAHOE BLUE. Please, wherever you are, take your cigarette butts and All Plastic home with you. The birds and the fish and the humans will be grateful," she wrote.
This is not the first time Dame Helen Mirren has spoken out about saving the planet. Back in 2018, Helen was part of a group of celebrities who took part in Greenpeace’s Protect the Antarctic campaign.
Speaking to the Express, Mirren said: "I’m delighted to be an Ambassador for an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary. The Antarctic is a special place, home to so many extraordinary animals, and it needs to be protected from the damage caused by humans to so much of the rest of the planet."
More recently, Helen shared a picture on Instagram of herself standing on a tree that had been wrongly cut down. She captioned the photograph, "This incredible tree was cut down to be displayed by PT Barnum as no one in the East would believe there were trees this big. I hope we have learned since then."
