Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not return to their roles as senior working royals, Buckingham Palace has just confirmed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from their royal duties last year, moving to Canada and then LA where they are now based with their one-year-old son, Archie. They cited press intrusion, privacy and wanting to be independent of the Crown as their reason for stepping back from the royal family.

The news is not a surprise. In fact, the confirmation was expected because – as part of Harry's negotiations with the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William last January – an agreement was made to revisit the Sussexes status one year on.

This clause was important to both the Sussexes, who were then unsure how they would fund themselves, and the Queen in case the couple wanted to return to the UK.

Just this week, Meghan and Harry announced they were pregnant with their second child. They also revealed they would be taking part in an pre-recorded interview with Oprah.
