Harry And Meghan Have Been Touring New York - Here's Everything You Need To Know
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made a whirlwind tour of New York in their first joint appearance since their daughter, Lilibet, was born in June.
The reason? To participate in Global Citizen Live, a 24-hour event broadcast live from Central Park on Saturday, which aimed to promote equal access to the COVID-19 vaccine and featured an all-star line-up, from Ed Sheeran to Lizzo and Elton John.
Harry and Meghan touched down in New York on Wednesday, checking in to five-star hotel The Carlyle - which was Princess Diana’s favourite place to stay in the city.
They started off their trip with a visit to the One World Observatory on Thursday, where they met government officials and paid their respects at the 9/11 memorial.
Meghan, who wore high suede heels from Aquazzura with navy trousers and an overcoat by Giorgio Armani (despite the humid weather), told reporters: ‘It’s wonderful to be back.'
Later, she changed into a black skirt and camel Max Mara coat for a visit to the United Nations to meet with the US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield to discuss racial justice, mental health awareness, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Then, it was on to the World Health Organisation's offices to discuss global vaccine equity with world leaders, experts, and activists, including Chelsea Clinton.
On Friday, the couple headed to Harlem to elementary school PS 123 Mahalia Jackson, to meet students and discuss healthy eating in the community. Harry and Meghan donated two boxes of vegetables and herbs and admired artwork created by the students.
Meghan, who wore a raspberry red trouser suit by Loro Piana, also did a reading from her best-selling children’s book, The Bench - the first time she’s read it to any children outside her own family.
After the visit, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had lunch at soul food restaurant Melba’s in south Harlem, to which they donated $25,000 for the restaurant’s employee relief fund, which directly aids hourly employees who were impacted by the pandemic.
On Saturday, the pair visited the United Nationals to meet with its Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed during its annual gathering of leaders. ’It was a lovely meeting,’ said Meghan as they left the UN headquarters.
Later, they attended the Global Live Citizen event, to which Meghan wore a Valentino shift dress and carried a Christian Dior's Lady D-Lite bag, which is named after Princess Diana. She also sported her late mother-in-law’s Cartier Tank watch, which was given to the Princess on her 21st birthday.
When the two of them appeared on stage, Harry revved up the crowd by asking: 'Are you ready to do what's necessary to end this pandemic?' and cupped a hand to his hear, to pretend he couldn’t hear the roars of agreement.
Meghan added: ‘There is so much that we can do today, now that can get us closer to ending this pandemic and that's why we're all here.’
Jennifer Lopez, Billie Eilish and Coldplay put on show-stopping performance as part of the festival - one of seven co-ordinated concerts around the world in London, Los Angeles, New York City, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Seoul, Sydney and Lagos as part of a 24-hour broadcast event.
Across the ocean, Doja Cat delivered a performance near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, while Kylie Minogue belted out her biggest hits for a crowd of adoring fans in London, England.
Throughout their visit, Meghan and Harry have been allegedly accompanied by a cameraperson to gather footage for a rumoured documentary about their lives for Netflix. Harry also appeared to be sporting a microphone at some points during the trip.
The couple also apparently had a photographer follow them in New York, allegedly to collect photographs for the archives of their Archewell foundation.
