Designer department store Harrods has announced plans to open an outlet store in Westfield White City this summer, where it will host its end-of-season sale, opening next Friday 3 July.

The move is an unusual step for the iconic London shop, which only has its Knightsbridge location and a few airport stores, but the decision has been taken as a result of the recent pandemic and lockdown, which has left plenty of stock to shift, as well as a need for social-distancing measures to be put in place for staff and customers.

'We couldn't really have a sale in the store,' managing director Michael Ward told the Business of Fashion. 'That isn’t socially responsible for us to do. The question was: how could we protect customers; how could we protect staff?'

Harrods has rented an 80,000-square-foot space in the shopping complex, which was formerly occupied by Debenhams. Here, it will be able to host its big summer sale, while keeping staff and customers safe with three-metre-wide walkways. Opening next Friday, the move is temporary, although Ward added that it is not out of the question that the measures will be taken again.

'We will have to see how this works out as we go towards Christmas, because obviously we will be faced with the same issue in January,'

With the sale happening in the Westfield location, it will leave the Knightsbridge store to focus on new-season, full-priced products.
