Designer department store Harrods has opened an outlet store in Westfield White City, where it is hosting its end-of-season sale.
The move is an unusual step for the iconic London shop, which only has its Knightsbridge location and a few airport stores, but the decision has been taken as a result of the recent pandemic and lockdown, which has left plenty of stock to shift, as well as a need for social-distancing measures to be put in place for staff and customers.
"We couldn't really have a sale in the store," managing director Michael Ward told the Business of Fashion. "That isn’t socially responsible for us to do. The question was: how could we protect customers; how could we protect staff?"
Harrods has rented an 80,000-square-foot space in the shopping complex, which was formerly occupied by Debenhams. Here, it is able to host its big summer sale, while keeping staff and customers safe with three-metre-wide walkways. The move is temporary, although Ward added that it is not out of the question that the measures will be taken again.
Meanwhile, fashion director Lydia King has explained that the business is aiming to ensure that the Harrods outlet experience is just as high-end as customers have come to expect in the Knightsbridge store.
"It’s important that our customers are treated to the renowned Harrods experience whilst shopping at Harrods Outlet, and this comes from the strength of the edits available in the new concept store. Some of my must-have picks in store are Zimmerman’s silk wrap dresses, Lisa Marie Fernandez’s effortless essentials and chic swimwear from Matteau. We are known for providing the ultimate in luxury, and the outlet offering will be no different."
With the sale happening in the Westfield location, it will leave the Knightsbridge store to focus on new-season, full-priced products – and there are of course pieces on sale online too. Shop some highlights from the site below and here.
