With the cold and flu season upon us, many are looking for ways to stay fighting fit this winter.

Everyday viruses are rarely serious, but can leave people nursing a runny nose, sore throat and pounding headache.

With no set treatment to speed up recovery, avoiding infections in the first place is the only proven way to ward off the sniffles.

Viruses like cold and flu enter the body via the eyes, nose or mouth, often as a result of us rubbing our face with contaminated hands.

Regular hand washing with soap and warm water should be the go-to, however, sanitisers can be helpful when out and about.

Although many sanitisers promote themselves as “anti-bacterial”, some may also kill viruses, providing they are made up of at least 60% alcohol.

Look out for products that list “alcohol denatured” as an ingredient. “Denaturing” involves adding chemicals that make the alcohol unfit for consumption.

To stay fit this winter, officials recommend hand sanitisers be used before preparing or eating food, after using the toilet and when handling animals or their waste.
