Article updated on 29/09/2022: In September 2021, Justin and Hailey Bieber made their first Met Gala appearance together as a couple.

At the time, a video surfaced of the 'Baby' singer appearing to whisper to his wife 'don't cry' as the crowd chanted 'Selena', referring to his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez.

During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the model addressed rumours that she was crying at the 'Selena' chants, insisting that they were 'not true'.

'So, yes, I could hear everyone screaming. And, again, I think there’s a certain part of you that has a numbness. I was, like, really surprised,' she said.

Bieber added: 'The whole thing of everybody being like: "Oh he’s trying to tell her not to cry," that was not true. It wasn’t making me cry.'

She did, however, acknowledge the chanting was 'disrespectful'. The model highlighted the speculation of her crying as a result of the chants was an example of how 'out of context things can be seen'.

Referring to the dark glasses people believed were worn to shield her tears, she clarified they were 'part of her look', and she would have worn them 'regardless'.

It wasn’t until watching the video back after the event that Bieber felt upset by the crowd's 'energy' and time spent chanting 'Selena'. She asserted: 'It was disrespectful. To me, to my relationship. It just was. Period. The end.'

Following the chants, numerous fans showed their support for the couple who recently celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary.

Just two weeks after Hailey and Justin Bieber celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary, the model has addressed speculation she 'stole' her now husband from Selena Gomez.

Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the 26-year-old told host Alexis Cooper that Justin, 28, had not cheated on Gomez with her.

'No, not once,' she stated, elaborating that she and the 'Baby' singer only started 'hooking up' when he had split from his on-and-off ex girlfriend Gomez in 2018.

The model continued: 'When him and I started hooking up, or anything of that sort, he was not in any relationship. It's not my character to mess with someone's relationship. I was raised better than that.

'I understand how it looks from the outside, but that was a situation where I know for a fact that it was the right thing for [Justin and Selena] to close that door, but of course, there's a very long history there and I respect that a lot.

'I don't want to talk on either one of their behalf's.'

The model, who has been married to the singer since September 2018, just two months after he popped the question, also addressed the online backlash she has faced due to her relationship.

The backlash has largely come from those who were emotionally invested in her husband and his ex Gomez's previous relationship, as they had dated for almost a decade. The pair were even dubbed 'Jelena' by their fans.

'A lot of the hate comes from like "oh you stole him" and the fact that he wished he ended up with someone else. And that's fine, you can wish that all you want, but it's not the case,' the model continued.

'There's a certain numbness that you get,' she said of seeing the hate comments from those devoted to her partner and his ex's former romance.

She continued: 'It still happens to this day, if I was to go live right now, it would still be happening. You reach a point where you have to ignore it.

'If we have moved on, why can't you?'

In a teaser clip from Bieber's Call Her Daddy interview, the Rhode founder addressed the years of rumours relating to her relationship with her husband, and his former romance with Gomez.

In the clip, she is seen responding to Cooper: 'This is so crazy I've literally never talked about this ever,' after he touched on the public being 'obsessed' with the former couple's relationship.

Cooper asked: 'Were you ever with Justin romantically at the same time as [Selena]?'

Bieber then admitted to wanting to set the record straight, saying: 'It's about people knowing the truth. Because there's a truth.'

On September 14, the model marked her fourth wedding anniversary by posting a carousel of herself and her husband on Instagram.

She also shared a heartfelt caption that read: '4 years married to you. the most beautiful human I’ve ever known... love of my life. Thank God for you [sic].'

The 'Sorry' singer honoured their anniversary by posting a photo of them snuggled up together with their puppy.

He wrote: 'Happy anniversary to my best friend and wifey @haileybieber .. thanks for making me better in every way. [sic]'

Though the couple first celebrated their wedding in an intimate New York City courthouse ceremony in 2018, they hosted a second extravagant wedding in South Carolina the following year.

Prior to their 2018 wedding, the couple were an item before breaking off their romance between 2016 and 2018.
