Much like clothes, herbs also go in and out of fashion within the world of wellness. Right now, it's the turn of ashwagandha to take the spotlight – one of Gwyneth Paltrow’s favourite supplements.

Wait, ashwa-what? Here's the low-down. A small Indian herbal shrub, ashwagandha's roots and berries have an impressive list of health benefits when ingested in its raw form. Turns out, this is one very useful little plant.

Research has discovered that ashwagandha can help treat a variety of ailments, making it a great all-rounder supplement to add to your routine. However, it's perhaps best known for its anxiety-relieving properties.

Multiple studies have confirmed it can lower levels of cortisol, a.k.a the hormone which the adrenal glands produce as a response to stress. So, if you’re struggling with anxiety, it may be that your cortisol levels are out of sync – something that ashwagandha could help you with.

It also improves sleep (thanks to the triethylene glycol in it) and lowers blood sugar levels, making it beneficial for those with Type 2 diabetes. One study even found it effective at helping women who are experiencing sexual dysfunction.

While it's been used in traditional Indian medicine for thousands of years, it's only started to trickle into western practise more recently. It was none other than Gwyneth Paltrow who turned us onto this miracle root – she sells ashwagandha-based products on her website, Goop and wrote on the site that she adds ashwagandha powder to her morning smoothies.

But, if you're looking for a more affordable option for giving this herb a whirl, there is currently 52% off a two month supply (120 capsules) on offer off as part of Amazon’s two day sales extravaganza, Prime Day.
