Grey’s Anatomy star Harry Shum Jr has revealed what it was like to film the famous Raccacoonie scenes from Everything Everywhere All at Once.

In one dimension from the sci-fi metaverse film, Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) sees a chef (Shum Jr) cook with a raccoon perched on his head, serving as a nod to the 2007 Pixar film Ratatouille.

In an interview with ComingSoon, Shum Jr, who plays Benson Kwan on Grey’s Anatomy, spoke about the process behind shooting the homage and the input from directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.

“It’s great. The Daniels hit me up and told me about the story – I mean, I was already in [when I heard it],” he said. “Then they kept telling me about the storyline and then they’re like, ‘It’s not long, but there’s a lot to chew on.’ I kind of rolled my sleeves up.

“In this universe, he is the protagonist of that universe. And I think we’re all protagonists in our own stories – in our own universe 0 in a lot of ways. So I just love that they went from this ridiculous gag to something so heartfelt and really directed it in that way as well,” he explained.

Despite the quirky nature of the gag, Shum Jr revealed further that he wanted to bring a seriousness to proceedings, adding: “I took it very seriously. I think all the actors in all their universes did that.

“I think that’s why the film works on the level of being able to be recognised in so many areas of the film,” he continued. “I would never have thought that I would be acting with a raccoon – not just in front of me, but on my head and along with Michelle Yeoh on my shoulders. I definitely don’t even believe that it’s real, but I’m so happy that it is.”

Everything Everywhere All at Once is expected to perform well at the next month’s Academy Awards, with the sci-fi film up for Best Picture.

Grey's Anatomy season 19 airs on Thursdays on ABC in the US. The show streams on Disney+ in the UK, where new episodes premiere on Wednesdays.
