Great Outfits in Fashion History: Jane Birkin in a Burberry Trench and Ruby-Red Boots

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In 'Great Outfits in Fashion History,' Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
One night in 1975, Jane Birkin stepped out of her Parisian apartment in an unconventional-yet-debonair combination: a Burberry trench coat and knee-high patent boots — the clothing underneath concealed entirely by the jacket. The purpose and destination of the outfit are unknown, but do they really matter?
A known outfit repeater, Birkin often added a Burberry trench to her uniform of jeans and a white tee. While the shoes were a less expected pick for the actor and singer, she was photographed wearing them again a few years later. What makes this look distinct is its nonchalance, a hallmark of Birkin's style and one of the many reasons she's frequently credited as an archetype of Parisian style.
