Grammys 2020: Ariana Grande's Giambattista Valli dress inspires hilarious memes on Twitter

The 62nd annual Grammy Awards provided viewers with plenty of memorable red carpet moments, from Tyler The Creator going full Wes Anderson in a pink bellboy ensemble to Billy Porter’s lamp-inspired look.

But there was one outfit that tipped the rest to the top spot. On Sunday, Ariana Grande arrived at the awards show wearing a gown that radiated Big Dress Energy (BDE) and was so over-the-top that it almost broke the internet.

For the occasion, the "7 Rings" singer opted for a Giambattista Valli dress that was made from 400 yards of tulle and took 200 hours of work to construct.

Grande accessorised the grey gown, which featured three tiers measured twenty-feet-wide, with opera-length gloves, customised Christian Louboutin heels with bespoke non-slip soles and her iconic ponytail, which was dyed a light shade of blonde.

The 26-year-old embraced her first big red carpet of the season and made a dramatic entrance by twirling and posing for the cameras in her colossal gown before crouching on the red carpet to ensure photographers got the perfect shot.

Fans had mixed reactions to the look on Twitter, with many praising the singer for her dramatic look.

“If Grammy have a nomination for ‘best dress’ I will vote 25352628 times for Ariana Grande,” one person wrote.

However, others disagreed, with another Twitter user writing: “It was a beautiful dress but a bit too much for the Grammys.”

For most people though, Grande’s outfit was simply great meme material, with the star being compared to everything from Glenda the Good Witch from Wicked to a shower loofah.

One of the first comparisons made was of the singer resembling Disney Princess Cinderella.

“Ariana grande is the living reincarnation of Cinderella,” one person wrote.

Another added: “Ariana Grande is finally getting to have her Cinderella moment”.

A third person shared a photo of Grande and Billie Eilish meeting at the awards, likening their looks to Glinda and Elphaba from Broadway musical Wicked, while another said the pair looked like Batman villains.

Perhaps the most scathing comparison came from a number of users who compared Grande’s dress to a shower loofah.

“Ariana Grande sitting in the front row lookin like a loofah [sic],” one person commented.

Another agreed, adding: “Ariana grande is currently a human loofah.”

The spectacle didn’t end there. The rapper also took to the stage in a series of different looks, including a classic black ball gown and a feather-trimmed robe.

Grande was nominated in the Album of the Year category. However, the award was given to Eilish.

“Can I just say I think Ariana Grande deserves this?” the 18-year-old said during her acceptance speech, adding that she didn’t want to “waste time.”

“We stand up here confused and grateful,” her 22-year-old brother added, noting that they didn’t prepare a speech.
