Grace Coddington Dishes On Vidal Sassoon's Famous Five-Point Haircut: 'It gave you a certain freedom'

14 May 2012

After the sudden passing of Vidal Sassoon last week, the beauty team are still remembering the hair hero's finest moments. You'll have already read Grazia Daily's tribute and over the weekend, even more stories about Vidal have emerged.

One of our favourites is an interview in The New York Times with Grace Coddington, who dishes on her days as a hair model for Mr. Sassoon. “He figured it out on me”, the US Vogue editor says of the famous five-point haircut that he debuted on her. “He was key to that whole look in the early sixties, that youthquake thing in London. The cut gave you a certain freedom. You weren’t chained to the salon and you certainly didn’t have to go and have it set with big rollers under a hair dryer for a couple of hours. He did it with a hand-held hair dryer so it wasn’t quite drip-dry, but it was remarkable.”

Grace, who went on endless trips with Sassoon to hair shows around England, also remarked on the precision of Vidal’s style. “It was a cut so precisely worked out that, no matter which way you shook it, there was never a sort of long piece hanging over the wrong side.” And you can see that was exactly what Vidal had in mind when he gave fashion designer Mary Quant her signature haircut as well as Mia Farrow’s gorgeous pixie crop, which we often dream about recreating ourselves.

Many years later, hairdressers across the globe still draw on Vidal's philosophy, ensuring the precision of the haircut is paramount. In fact, when we caught up with James Pryce a few weeks ago at the Josh Wood Atelier, he also talked about the importance of precision within a haircut. Vidal, your wisdom lives on.
