Gourdzilla! Teacher Breaks US Record For Largest Pumpkin In Time For Halloween

A giant pumpkin has set a new US record for being the heaviest in the country. The gourd was grown by Travis Gienger, from Anoka, Minnesota. The horticulture teacher revealed he had smashed the US record after the pumpkin won an annual pumpkin-weighing contest in northern California. Travis drove the gargantuan gourd for 35 hours to see his hard work pay off at the 49th World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco. The Half Moon Bay Pumpkin King’s very own gourdzilla is a rhinoceros-sized 2560-pound beast that landed him the $23,040 first prize. Travis previously won the same contest in northern California in 2020. A grower in Italy holds the world record for the heaviest pumpkin. He grew a 2,702lbs squash in 2021, according to Guinness World Records.
