Good news redheads, a ginger emoji might finally be on the cards

Last week on Whatsapp a friend illustrated the group of us going to see dance troup Diversity via the medium of emojis. But while there was a skin tone and hair colour to represent every single person in our crew, there wasn’t anything that offered a likeness to myself. Not even close.

For though it’s been more than a year since emojis became available in different skin tones so now blondes, brown and black haired people are represented on the emoji spectrum, there’s currently no emoji for people of the ginger-haired variety like myself. *sad face emoji*

But hopefully not for much longer.

Because fed-up redheads have been busy campaigning for a ginger emoji to be added to the collection. An online petition has been started in Scotland, which according to statistics has a higher number of redheads. And the campaign to get us gingers covered in the emoji spectrum is quickly picking up pace with over 20,000 throwing their freckly weight behind the movement.

“Despite the recent racial and sexual ‘diversification’ of Apple’s emoji to be released in the next iOS 8.3 update, there’s still an important group of people missing from the emoji family of 300 new symbols,” the change.org page reads.

“Redheads. In all their glorious gingerness, they’ve been missed out. Again. If you say you’re going to diversify, why not add a few red-haired emoji in the mix? Natural redheads may be rare at less than 2% of the world’s population, but that is 138,000,000 iPhones waiting to happen.”

And the pressure seems to have had the desired effect because next week, Apple is hosting a Unicode Technical Committee meeting to discuss the matter.

“The lack of a redhead emoji has been the most frequent complaint from users in the past three months,” Jeremy Burge, founder of emoji website Emojipedia told The Telegraph.

‘This document aims to move the discussion forward on how this can be addressed,’ he added.

Burge, who tabled the proposal himself, said that there were a number of different ways of a ginger character could be implemented, from a single “redhead person” on the keyboard, to allowing any existing emoji to have red hair.

And the news has gone down well with the gingers of social media.

“Finally! Red head emojis” wrote one red-haired user.

“About time! Even flan has its own emoji!!!” added another.

“This is great news! I’ve been at a loss for which emoji to use as a redhead,” wrote another pleased user.

As for me, well I’m just glad there’s a chance I’ll finally be added in emoji form to the Diversity squad. Can’t think of more appropriate timing.
