Good Morning Britain's stand-in host Richard Bacon paid a hesitant tribute to controversial anchor Piers Morgan after his "sweet" gesture following Richard's death scare last year.

Speaking to Susanna Reid, Richard said: "When you come that close to death, you also get to see the best side of people, not just the NHS that saved my life, but also friends.

"And I'm hesitant to pay tribute to Piers Morgan, but he did call my wife during that time and was very sweet and actually very thoughtful."

Susanna added: "Wow, the passionate side of Piers Morgan!"

The 43-year-old former Blue Peter host was taken ill while on a transatlantic flight in July 2018, which resulted in him being placed in a medical coma for treatment.

The presenter used this opportunity to praise the NHS for saving his life, saying: "The system is designed to offer help to everyone, which is not the same in America where I live. My outcome would have been very different if this had happened to me in the States.

"So, if you don't have proper insurance, and you get the sort of lung infection I had, you would have been on the hook for hundreds of thousands.

"Yet in Britain, you just walk out and say, 'Bye, thanks for saving my life.' I thanked the doctor and he said, ‘You don't have to thank me. I'm just doing my job.' That's the difference."

Earlier this week, GMB was interrupted by the set falling down, while TOWIE's James Argent accidentally enraged viewers after revealing a huge Line of Duty spoiler on the show.

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays from 6am.
