Gogglebox star brands Gavin & Stacey finale 'as good as It's a Wonderful Life' as castmates in tears
Gogglebox star has compared the Gavin & Stacey finale to the Christmas film It's a Wonderful Life. Meanwhile, the Channel 4's reality television series saw the castmates scream during one important scene in the BBC comedy series.
More than 12m viewers tuned in to watch Gavin & Stacey: The Finale on Christmas Day. It was the last ever episode of the series that has been on our screens and in our hearts for 17 years. The last time we saw the Shipman and West families was back in 2019 in another Christmas special when Nessa, played by Ruth Jones, professed her love to Smithy (played by James Corden) and got down on one knee to ask him to marry her, despite Smithy being in a relationship with Aikman's character Sonia.
But the final ever episode confirmed that Smithy had left Nessa high and dry following the proposal and continued with his plans to marry Sonia. Since the airing of the special episode, many fans have had their say on the series, its cast members and storyline, including those on Gogglebox. On Wednesday, January 1 (New Year's Day), Gogglebox's series 24 episode 16 saw the castmates watch the last ever Gavin & Stacey episode. Shaun from the Malone family from Manchester said: "It's so good that they are doing this, but there's that bit of sadness knowing it's going to be the last ever one".
During the scene where Smithy's loved ones, including Gavin (played by Mathew Horne), Bryn (played by Rob Brydon) and Stacey (played by Joanna Page), told him that marrying Sonia was a "bad idea", some of the Gogglebox castmates also stood up in agreement.
As Smithy then asked Mick (played by Larry Lamb) for his opinion, Gogglebox's Pete told his sister Sophie: "The thing is, this is actually making me a bit emotional." Sophie agreed and said: "It's getting me". Pete then added: "Mick and Pam are like his mum and dad really."
Meanwhile, Mary who was watching the final episode with her husband Giles in Wiltshire, was clearly moved to tears as Smithy confessed that he had met someone "better" than Sonia 17 years ago, alluding to Nessa. "Oh, this is marvellous," Mary said. The castmates screamed as Smithy realised he was in love with Nessa.
After Nessa and Smithy eventually tied the knot, many of the Gogglebox castmates were moved to tears. "This is a really good ending to a really good Christmas Day," said Julie from the Malone family. "That's made my Christmas, that has," Dave from Caerphilly told his wife Shirley.
Mary, who was still moved to tears towards the end of Gavin & Stacey, said: "I think it's the most rewarding thing I've ever seen, even though I wasn't interested in them before." She continued: "It's a bit like that film, It's a Wonderful Live with James Stewart, where the whole village comes to his house to say what they feel about him."
Her husband Giles responded with: "You don't tend to get 'emosh' as often as you used to, Mary. I know why you don't get so 'emosh'". Then Mary interjected: "Because the Queen's dead." Giles agreed and said: "Cos the Queen's dead, and she was always the one that triggered it." Mary was then moved to tears even more. As he pointed out that Mary was crying, Giles added: "Look, even the name of the Queen, Mary."
