GMB star shares 'breaking news' about Kate Garraway's son from National Television Awards

Good Morning Britain's Richard Arnold had a bit of fun from the National Television Awards red carpet as he reported some "breaking news" to his ITV colleagues.

Charming viewers with his cheeky banter, the entertainment guru was seen in a clip joking on air with Kate Garraway who looked fabulous as she attended the event alongside her children, Darcey and Billy. The presenter was there for a very special reason: she scooped up the prize for Best Authored Documentary with her poignant film, Kate Garraway: Derek's Story.

Kate explained: "There was a lovely moment talking frocks and stuff with Richard, where he suddenly caught sight of Billy, who of course he held as a baby. He said, 'I don't know what to begin with – you using hair products and the suit! You could be in a boyband!'"

Richard chimed in: "It's extraordinary!" Kate said Billy wondered if it was an insult, but reassured him: "No! For Richard and I's age group, being in a boyband is a good thing!" with Richard agreeing: "It's a huge compliment!"

Kate also revealed the heartbreaking words Billy wanted to say about his late dad Derek Draper while accepting the award on-stage. She said: "It was very emotional for us. Bittersweet. The children, when we came off stage, burst into tears, and Bill said 'In the end I did want to speak'. Neither of them wanted to say anything obviously I was very happy for them to. He said 'I wanted to say dad lives on in our hearts'."

She continued, "I said 'I'm so glad you didn't because I think that would have floored me and I wouldn't have been able to speak.'"

Expressing gratitude for a recent accolade, Kate admitted the award was incredibly meaningful, saying: "Thank you to everyone who voted. Not for me but for all the carers."

Reflecting on her family life, it's noted that Kate and Derek have two children, Darcey and Billy, born in March 2006 and July 2009 respectively. The couple, who tied the knot in 2005 after meeting the previous year, were set up by a mutual friend.

Recalling how they first met, Kate recounted a funny anecdote during an interview with GMTV political editor Gloria De Piero. Gloria had enquired if Kate had any single friends interested in meeting Derek.

On their first date, Derek had to reschedule due to an unexpected commitment, which Kate initially thought was a joke. She humorously recalled, "He asked me out, but the day of our date called to say he had a clash."

"He'd promised to serve wine at an amateur watercolour painting exhibition at his church. I really thought it was a wind-up. But I turned up and he was indeed serving wine to the congregation in a salmon-pink jumper."
