Glenn Hoddle believes the late Diego Maradona is the best player he ever played with - and was even better than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Maradona passed away at the age of 60 on Wednesday. The Argentine football legend’s spokesperson, Sebastian Sanchi, said Maradona died of a heart attack, two weeks after being released from a hospital in Buenos Aires following brain surgery.

Maradona is widely recognised as one of the greatest players in the history of football - and England and Spurs icon Hoddle has put the Barcelona and Napoli legend at the top of his list.

Standard Sport columnist Hoddle was answering questions last weekend on The Glenn Hoddle Footy Show as part of our new ‘Ask Hodd’ series.

Asked by a Standard reader who was the best player he ever played with, Hoddle replied: "I had the pleasure of playing with Diego Maradona in Ossie Ardiles’ testimonial.

"For me, he was the best player on the planet at the time and the best I have ever seen - even better than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

"What he could do on these pitches now would be phenomenal, and with the rules as well.

"So yeah, it has got to be Maradona."
