Warning: The following article contains major spoilers for Our Girl's latest episode.

Our Girl's writer is responding to outrage from fans over the brutal death one of the show's major characters.

Rather appropriately for Halloween, two figurative ghosts from Georgie Lane's (Michelle Keegan) past came back to haunt her in Our Girl last night [October 31], and sadly, one became an actual ghost by episode's end.

Fresh off a tense episode last week in which gobby recruit Private Maisie Richards (Shalom Brune-Franklin) put Georgie (and viewers) through a gamut of emotions - first cruelly flaunting her fling with Elvis (Luke Pasqualino) and then showing incredible bravery after being killed in the line of duty - there was no rest for the weary.

Georgie was once again forced to confront her feelings for old flame Elvis tonight, as 2 Section were sent deep into Afghanistan in order to support him on their most dangerous mission yet.

The embattled and exhausted crew were sent to track down Aatan Omar, the Taliban terrorist with a grudge against Georgie - who infamously escaped the British military capture. However, those circumstances were surprisingly conducive to Elvis and Georgie finally reconciling.

As the two waited to launch their assault on Omar, they dreamt of making plans for a life together outside the army, and were even thinking about starting a family together. But it was not to be.

The hour rounded to a close with an ambush on 2 Section that ended tragically. As he fought off the insurgents, Elvis was blasted from the top of a building by a bomb, with Georgie left cradling his lifeless body.

"He died in my arms," Georgie sobbed to her captain.

Following transmission, Our Girl creator Tony Grounds confirmed to the Radio Times that Luke Pasqualino really has left the series - and put the decision to kill off Elvis down to practical concerns.

"Firstly in terms of honouring that story – it felt like their relationship was brilliant and toxic at the same time and it was a great dramatic way to go with it," the writer argued. "Being in the forces, he's quite close to death all the time so that was the one thing that stuck in my mind.
"And then [Luke] had signed a contract to do another show which tied him up for five years with Snatch. So we had no choice.

"We could have sent [Elvis] to prison or on holiday or just not seen him for five years but that seemed a bit daft so we thought let's take this brave way – and he dies on the battlefield in Georgie Lane's arms. We were forced into that way of thinking because I love him and I would happily have had Elvis in forever."

Grounds also tried making the case that having Georgie and Elvis living happily ever after together wouldn't have been conducive to keeping up the drama of Our Girl.

"In drama, as soon as people end up together it's the end of the story," he reasoned. "Maybe it's the right thing because I'd have carried on with this explosive love/hate.

"They're like magnets – they kind of burn to be together and whenever they see each other all those feelings come bubbling to the surface like a volcano and yet it never seems to work for them. I could have carried that on for a bit longer but we have done it for two series."

Our Girl will return to BBC One in 2018.
