Netflix's The Crown was the runaway hit at Sunday night's Golden Globes. As well as taking home the top prize for Best Drama Series, Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Series (Josh O'Connor) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series (Emma Corrin), Gillian Anderson also bagged the award for Best Supporting Actress.

But it was Gillian's speech - and more specifically her accent - that really caught viewers' attention at home.

Despite being born in the US, the actor has played a range of British characters over the years, including her recent portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in the royal drama.

“I watched the full run of The X-Files, but after The Crown, Sex Education, I am at the point where I am legit surprised to hear Gillian Anderson speak in an American accent," one person tweeted.

“It’s always thrilling to hear what accent Gillian Anderson is going to choose at any given moment,” said a second.

Gillian, who also speaks in a British accent in The Fall, was born in Chicago and moved to London as a child. Aged 11, she moved back to the US but now lives in London permanently.

Addressing her accent in the past, she told The Telegraph that she easily switches between British and American.

"Even on the phone my accent will change. Part of me wishes I could control it, but I can’t. I just slip into one or the other. When I moved to the States I tried hard to cling on to my British accent because it made me different."
