After four years, Gillian Anderson and The Crown creator Peter Morgan have reportedly announced their separation.

The news was broken late last night by the Mail Online, who report that despite the split, the pair - who recently worked together on the latest season of The Crown - remain on amicable terms.

52 year-old Anderson - who played Margaret Thatcher in season 4 of the hit series - was first linked to Morgan in 2016, after attending a party together in New York to promote The Crown, where she was heard telling guests that the two were an item.

Since then they've appeared on numerous red carpets together, with the Sex Education star recently revealing to Harper's Bazaar that the couple managed to work successfully together in a professional capacity thanks to the very clear rules they laid out on set.

'For [my and Peter's] own sanity, and actually for the benefit of the relationship, we had very clear boundaries: 'I am not going to comment on the script, but you are not allowed to comment on the performance!' she said, explaining that she's 'pretty good' at compartmentalising her life.

Earlier this year in January, Anderson also spoke to The Times about her relationship with 57 year-old Morgan, revealing why the pair had chosen not to live together after being together for several years.

'If we did [live together], that would be the end of us. It works so well as it is, it feels so special when we do come together. And when I am with my kids, I can be completely there for them,' she explained.

Admitting that she finds it exciting being able to choose to be together rather than being together out of duty: 'There is nothing locking us in, nothing that brings up that fear of 'Oh gosh, I can't leave because what will happen to the house, how will we separate?'

'I start to miss the person I want to be with, which is a lovely feeling,' she continued, joking that: 'It is so huge for me to be able to see a pair of trousers left lying on the floor at my partner’s house and to step over them and not feel it is my job to do something about it!'

Whilst news of the split is sad news for the former couple, we're glad that they are at least aiming to stay friendly and are both pretty busy professionally at the moment.

Morgan is currently finalising scripts for the fifth season of The Crown, while Anderson is in the midst of reprising her role as sex therapist Jean Milburn, filming season 3 of Sex Education.

We wish them both the best!
