Karlie Kloss. Gigi Hadid. Reese Witherspoon. Gwyneth Paltrow. What might sound like our dream dinner party guestlist is, in fact, just a few of the names filling up journalist Derek Blasberg’s little black pocketbook.
Over the years, the writer and New York Times best-selling author has accumulated an A-list ‘squad’ of friends. Many of whom he's regularly spotted with, be it sitting front row at the most exclusive of fashion week shows, or partying into the wee hours in nightclubs from New York to Paris.
So, when your friendship roster is as impressive as Blasberg's, it makes playing 'phone a friend' an entertaining exercise.
Greeting ELLE UK in his hotel room wearing Gucci slippers, the 37-year-old – who is the head of fashion and beauty partnerships at YouTube - divulged some of fashion’s most best kept secrets, whether it's where to grab a greasy burger during NYFW or the best person in fashion to have by your side at a show.
‘She’s a pro that Gigi Hadid,’ Blasberg, who recently interviewed pal Cara Delevingne for ELLE UK, tells us.
Revealing that the supermodel recently suffered a fashion faux pas when the zipper on her blue trousers broke on the way to the launch of the Youtube.com/fashion party in New York City last month, the writer said the model was a ‘seasoned’ professional in the moment.
‘She whip stitched that zipper herself, showed up to the party on time and much like she did at Marc Jacobs, the show must go on,’ he says.
Hadid is also Blasberg’s go-to expert when it comes to finding a bite to eat in the Big Apple. ‘She was on a woman quest to find the best burger in New York City,’ Blasberg explains of his first meeting with the 24-year-old.
Her favourite? ‘JG Melon on Third Avenue.’
Having danced the night away with barefooted Katie Grand, Karen Elson and Rita Ora at London Fashion Week – ‘my thighs were sore like I’d done a Soul Cycle class’ – the celebrity BFF admitted that ‘fabulous' models Ashley Graham and Joan Smalls are his go-to women to have by his side in the fashion industry.
‘Smalls is one of the funniest, campest, quick-wittedest, jabby [people],’ he reveals. ‘She’s a good sparring partner when it comes to having a little steam blown off in this fashion circus.’
Meanwhile, model-turned-designer Alexa Chung is the best 'plus one' at a wedding. Opening up about recent nuptials he attended with Chung, the New York-based star admits the Brit was 'equally as enthusiastic'.
'Alexa is probably by dream wedding date,' he says.
With almost a million Instagram followers featuring countless snaps of A-listers including Kaia Gerber, Kendall Jenner and Victoria Beckham, it’s fair to say Blasberg knows exactly the kind of content that social media users lust for.
But when it comes to his dream celebrity launching their own YouTube channel, he thinks there’s only one person for the job – Hadid.
‘She had a childhood teenage account called ‘Ask Gigi’,’ he says, adding that he recently asked the Californian star to relaunch her channel and rename it ‘Ask Gigi: Again.’
One thing’s for sure, we’d subscribe to that.
