The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife is officially underway!

The film, which is working under the code name 'Firehouse' (a reference to the Ghostbusters headquarters in the original films), has begun production in the UK. Now, the first set photo has been shared.

The official Ghostbusters Twitter account posted a photo of director Jason Reitman and writer Gil Kenan on set with a clapperboard and a Ghost Trap. "Back in the Firehouse. Day One!" the caption reads.

A sequel to Afterlife had been teased in the film's end credits, which revealed it will be set in the iconic New York City firehouse.

Kenan previously spoke about the sequel when chatting with The Hollywood Reporter. He noted: "We're writing as quickly as we can. We had the story before we finished Afterlife.

"We have been crafting this with as much care as it took to build Afterlife into a worthy sequel."

He and Reitman also confirmed Ernie Hudson will be returning as Winston Zeddemore. Hudson first played the role in the classic 1984 film alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and the late Harold Ramis.

When talking about how much Hudson will be involved, Reitman teased: "The character of Winston Zeddemore and Zeddemore Industries figures strongly into the future of Ghostbusters."

Reitman and Kenan are also working on an animated Ghostbusters series for Netflix. Speaking about the show to THR, Kenan said: "The animated film will take us to places that we've never been before.

"We love these characters, and we're so excited to push the boundaries of what we think of as a Ghostbusters story. We will keep the flame burning bright with all these concepts, which will continue to grow what a Ghostbusters story can be."

Reitman added: "An animated series and an animated film will allow us to go deeper into places that Dan Aykroyd talked about when he first talked about Ghostbusters."

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel is due to be released in cinemas on December 20.
