So, summer 2020 hasn’t exactly gone as we had expected. Rather than relaxing on a far flung beach and topping up our tan, we’re sitting at home (or, at best, in the local park).

There are ways that we can make the best of lockdown, though, and if you’re sick of banana bread, we’d suggest trying your hand at homemade ice cream instead, now it's sunnier — which means you'll need an ice cream maker.

A lot of the best options in the GHI’s latest tests are quite pricey, but we did spot one top-performer for just under £40 — with a great score of 80/100.

This Lakeland Digital Ice Cream maker impressed testers with its consistent results, ease of use and clear controls. It made a good vanilla ice cream very quickly, along with a lovely sorbet — although it needed a little longer in the freezer than the recipe suggested. It also coped well with chocolate chips, which were well mixed in well.

On the flip side, the team did feel that the ingredient hole could have been a bit larger and it was a little noisy while in use. Some of the included recipes also could have been clearer (although we could just recommend using ours instead!)

We know that ice cream is not exactly a healthy snack, but at least homemade versions have fewer preservatives than shop-bought options, so investing in one of these machines is a good way to make it as guilt-free as possible.

In any case, we love that for under £40 we can whip up some cooling treats to tuck into during lockdown sunbathing sessions, so this is definitely something we’ll be picking up now summer’s in full swing. You can pick one up from Lakeland here.
