Ghd has long been a leader when it comes to styling innovation, but its first launch of 2023 is one of the most intriguing in a long time.

The brand has today revealed the Duet: its first wet-to-straight styling tool that takes you from towel-dried to poker-straight in one easy sweep (okay, perhaps two or three).

In short, the Duet can replace both your hairdryer and straightener, combining convection and conduction to dry, style and set hair and shave minutes off those laborious early mornings.

Of course, there are premium hot-air stylers on the market that promise to smooth, add volume and style already – but Ghd’s is the only one to combine air flow with ceramic straightening plates, making it a tempting proposition for anyone that wants more frizz-taming power than a hot brush can offer.

The internal airflow is surrounded by four ceramic plates, which conduct a lower temperature than your classic straighteners to eliminate the risk of damage – in fact, the brand claims the tool is damage-free, thanks to the maximum 120 degree heat. (If you remember the old 'wet-to-straight' tool that briefly dominated the early Noughties styling market, know this is nothing like that.) With the airflow doing most of the work, there’s no need to fall back on super-high temperatures to obtain that poker-straight, extra-glossy finish.

Admittedly, the device is slightly unwieldy, especially for anyone used to a slender pair of straighteners, but after a couple of uses it really is a cinch to master: two to three passes through the plates will take most hair types from damp to sleek and styled.

Indeed, we’ve tried it on unruly curls and, while it took a little longer to achieve poker-straight lengths, we can confirm the Duet is up to the task. The only sticking points? Super-short hair and fringes, which will require a smaller, more tailored styling tool.

A brushless motor means it’s both light and impressively quiet, while the ‘shine shot’ button is another considered feature. Activating this function (once your hair is dry) stops the airflow segment of the styler and increases the heat of the ceramic plates to 185 degrees, the same as a traditional pair of Ghd straighteners – perfect for those finishing touches. It’s ideal for freshening up second-day hair, and means you don’t need an army of styling tools stacked in your cabinet.

So, is the Duet worth it? Of course, the price point is hefty, so it really depends on what you already have at home. If you've already invested in a salon-standard hairdryer or techy hot styler, you might not also need this one. But if you're yet to jump on the hot-brush bandwagon and like to wear your hair straight and sleek, the Duet may well be a wise investment.
