Geri Halliwell's iconic Union Flag dress she wore while performing with the Spice Girls at the Brit Awards in 1997 quickly became her signature look. Every tribute act or fancy dress costume, Ginger Spice is cladded in the patriotic flag print.

But turns out the dress had some doubters, and if Geri hadn't stayed true and gone for it, the iconic look never would have came to be.

The singer shared a fabulous throwback of herself in the look 24 years ago, after fans compared Dua Lipa's Union Flag mini skirt suit, worn while performing at this weeks 2021 Brit Awards, to Geri's famous frock moment.

She wrote: 'Trust yourself. ... this dress is a reminder to follow your instincts and be yourself. 24 years ago I had an idea- to wear a Union Jack to celebrate The Brit Awards. Despite the doubts, I trusted my instincts and wore it anyway. All these years later to see it worn by a fellow sister is so special. 🇬🇧 ✌🏻#girlpower'

We're so glad she did! The star also added the now famous story of what the dress was made of, telling fans and followers: "P.S. it was £5 tea towel on a Gucci dress. #followyourdreams"

She's spoken before about DIY adding the tea-towel to the dress with her mum's help in the 24 hours before the career defining moment.

We wish World Book Day had been a thing while Geri was at school because it sounds like her mum is a last minute costume hero.

Geri shared a snap of Dua's look and also thanked and congratulated Little Mix on their Best British Group win, as the first girl band ever to win the award. Little Mix dedicated the win to the Spice Girls and all the other great British girl bands who'd not been given the deserved accolade.
