Scots have been left scratching their heads as they attempt to crack GCHQ’s annual festive puzzle, released today (December 11).

The brain teaser features in the Christmas card that the security agency's chief sends to fellow spies each year.

It is intended to test the teamwork and problem-solving skills that are essential for the government's intelligence operatives.

The Christmas puzzle is a rare glimpse inside the day-to-day operations of the secretive organisation, and an indication of the impressive intelligence demanded to enter its ranks.

So what is GCHQ, and how does it serve the UK's national interests?

What is GCHQ?

GCHQ is a leading intelligence, cyber and security agency tasked with identifying, analysing and disrupting threats to the UK. It is one of the three UK Intelligence and Security Agencies, along with MI5 and the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6).

GCHQ keeps the country safe by collecting intelligence and analysing data through a combination of cutting-edge technology and productive partnerships.

Although the organisation focuses mainly on countering cyber-attacks, terrorism and espionage, its work changes in line with evolving global dangers.

This broad remit has seen GCHS cover everything from the national response to the Covid-19 pandemic, to organised crime and cyber security.

What is its history?

GCHQ was established after the start of WW1, when signals intelligence provided valuable information about enemy plans.

It is best known for its work during WW2, when a team led by Alan Turing cracked the German ‘Enigma’ code and helped to end the war.

Where are the GCHQ offices?

GCHQ is headquartered at "The Doughnut", which receives its nickname for its resemblance to the sweet treat, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. However, the government agency also has offices across England, in the major cities London and Manchester. Staff are also based in small towns and villages in remote areas such as Cornwall, Lincolnshire, and Lancashire.

Unfortunately, GCHQ does not currently have offices in Scotland, but it recruits operatives from all over the UK.

Who can work at GCHQ?

While British spies traditionally received a "tap on the shoulder" at university, these days GCHQ has modernised its recruitment process to target a wider range of skills and backgrounds.

GCHQ hopefuls can apply directly via the organisation's careers website, or they can even be singled out on social media.

As a national organisation with a broad range of specialisms, GCHQ recruits for a wide selection of roles. These range from cyber security analysts to people who can speak and understand a wide range of languages and dialects.

People with more corporate skillsets like finance and administration support are also encouraged to apply.
