Gavin & Stacey's Neil the Baby star shares next career move after last ever episode

Gavin & Stacey star Oscar Hartland has opened up about what he's going to do next after playing Neil the Baby for the last time.

The 15-year-old actor returned to play his iconic character for the final episode of the BBC series on Christmas Day after James Corden and Ruth Jones reunited one last time to pen and star in a special instalment that would resolve the fate of the show's much-loved characters.

Oscar, who played Neil the Baby since 2008, appeared on ITV's Lorraine on Friday (January 3) morning to discuss his future after showing off his impressive vocals by singing Blackbird during the special episode.

He explained to presenter Ranvir Singh: "It's a bit of both [acting and music]. I'm really opened minded to some movies, some TV shows and stuff. The music is always there. I'm writing every night."

"Ruth and James have given me a huge platform and I couldn't be more thankful. They've given me the space to show people what I can do which I'm really, really thankful for."

The finale saw the families of Stacey Shipman (Joanna Page) and her husband Gavin (Mathew Horne) preparing for a wedding, which was assumed to be between Smithy (James Corden) and Nessa (Ruth Jones following her proposal in the festive special five years ago.

However, viewers were initially disappointed when they found out that the wedding was actually between Smithy and Sonia (Laura Aikman) his girlfriend from the 2019 Christmas Day episode.

The latest special revealed that Nessa's previous proposal was interrupted by Gavin before Smithy could respond, and the two never broached the subject again. Fast-forward to the wedding day in 2024, and following a string of incidents, best man Gavin confided in Smithy during the ceremony that he believed marrying Sonia was a mistake.

When several guests including Neil the Baby, Smithy and Nessa's teenage son, rose to their feet when asked if anyone objects to the union, Smithy realised he must admit his "true" feelings, leaving Sonia at the altar.

The group then embarked on a frantic race to find Nessa before she departed from Southampton Dock for her job on the ships, as Neil the Baby prepared to relocate to Essex to start an apprenticeship with his father.

After a tumultuous relationship, Smithy proposed to Nessa, and the final scene showcased a touching montage of a modest wedding, with Nessa donning a black dress and the couple finally achieving their fairy-tale ending.

Gavin & Stacey: The Finale is available to watch on BBC iPlayer and Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 9am
