Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell gave fans of the show a huge surprise as it dropped previously unseen footage of Uncle Bryn and Jason on the legendary fishing trip thatwas one of the sitcom's most famous running jokes. The hour-long show saw celebrity fans like Minnie Driver, Richard Curtis and Lena Dunham wax lyrical about why they loved the show so much and the cast, headed up by James Corden and Ruth Jones, reminisce about the 18 years making the show, which first aired in 2007.

But as fans at home loved hearing from the talking heads on screen, it was the snap bit of footage airing over the end credits that send them wild. In what was shaky, hand-held camcorder-style footage meant to be from decades before Rob Brydon (Bryn) and Rob Wilfort (Jason) were shown in era-appropriate attire and hairdos on their fateful fishing trip.

The mystery of the fishing trip caused a big split between the uncle and nephew, which was well documented in the original three series, no one knows what happened other than Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri) and when the story is about to be shared, something usually happens to halt the tale being exposed to others.

In the footage, Bryn is heard saying "who do we have here?" before the camera pans to Jason holding a fish. Bryn is also heard saying "no one will go hungry in this camp tonight," before the screen fades to black as he says: "Enjoy your soup!" The soup on the fire is one of the key bits of info we know about the fishing trip as well as it being very cold, and, whatever happened "wasn't illiegal."

Viewers loved the Easter egg videos of the trip. One wrote: "Oh my Christ! What a surprising little Easter egg we just had at the end of the Gavin & Stacey farewell just then!"

Another added on X: "The fishing trip...brilliant ending." A third said: "THE FISHING TRIP!!! What a way to close the entirety of this whole story!"

There was a lot of shock about the footage: "THE END OF THE GAVIN AND STACEY DOCUMENTARY OH MY GOD??!"
