Sheridan Smith has confirmed she won’t be starring in the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special, and it sounds like she’s just as upset as we are about it...

The actress admitted she would love to to reprise the role of Ruth ‘Rudi’ Smith, who’s the sister to James Corden’s Smithy in the cult TV classic, but sadly wasn’t asked.

"I wish," Sheridan said when she was asked about returning to the role for the special.

Speaking on BBC Radio 2 with Zoe Ball, she added, "No I’m not going to be in it. I don’t think, anyway."

Sheridan didn’t explain why she wasn’t part of the cast this time around, but showing there’s no hard feelings, continued: "Like everyone, I can’t wait to watch the Christmas Special. I’m so proud to be have been a part of something so special."

Interestingly, pretty much all the other characters will be back, including Matthew Horne and Joanna Page (Gavin and Stacey), Rob Brydon (Bryn), Larry Lamb (Mick) and Alison Steadman (Pam).

Creators James and Ruth Jones recently revealed the inspiration for the cult classic comeback - nine years after it ended - came after the pair had a conversation about what the characters could be up to today.

The duo said in a statement: "Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special.

"We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy. We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen."

Yeah, cheers Beeb!
