Gabrielle Union has insisted she didn't splurge thousands of dollars on a designer handbag for her little girl.

The L.A.'s Finest actress uploaded a video of her two-year-old daughter Kaavia James opening up a box containing a tiny Valentino purse to TikTok last week.

While Kaavia was delighted with the handbag, which retails for around $3,790 (£2,670), some followers questioned why Gabrielle would drop so much money on the item. However, while she was walking the red carpet at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night, the star explained that the black leather handbag was actually a gift from bosses at the Italian luxury brand.

"Valentino was kind enough to send us mommy-and-daughter matching bags. So, for everyone who thought I bought my child a $3,000-plus bag when she can't poop in the potty on her own - um, no," the 48-year-old smiled to Entertainment Tonight, before adding: "(Kaavia's) been literally sleeping with it."

Gabrielle often posts snaps of her and Kaavia's matching outfits on Instagram, with it appearing that the tot takes a keen interest in fashion.

And Kaavia fully approved of her mum's choice of a white Prada gown with a plunging neckline and Bulgari jewellery for the Billboard Music Awards.

"It felt so good just to get out of the house. You know, there were a couple tears from Kaav at the door. She's like, 'Have fun, Mom,'" she shared. "(Kaavia) thought I looked very pretty. She was like, 'White dress.' And I was like, 'Good?' And she was like, 'You look pretty, Mommy.'"
