Gabby Logan MBE has opened up about feeling at the top of her game in midlife, and making the decision to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for her perimenopause

Like a cosy cuppa while watching new-season Line Of Duty, there are few things more warm and comforting than seeing Gabby Logan on the telly. The much-loved presenter, 47, opened up on this week's Going For Goal podcast about how - as a mum of two teenagers, with a 20-year career behind her - she's the best she's ever been at her job, and why it never occurred to her to wave goodbye to her career once she hit menopausal age.
In the latest episode, the TV star - who has hosted major sports events, from the Olympics to the World Cup, and is currently fronting the BBC's Six Nations coverage - explains why she's still thriving in the world of broadcasting, including starting the hit The Mid Point podcast, where she interviews everyone from Davina McCall to Rio Ferdinand about what it means to be at the half-way stage of your life.
'Yes, I’ve got more lines and of course I’m not looking exactly the same as I was when I was 32,' she tells WH's editor-in-chief Claire Sanderson. 'But I also [feel] like [I've] got more experience - there’s more I want to do and I’m better at my job... all those things that are plus points for being a bit older. I just didn’t want to stop work just because of being a certain age.'
However, Gabby, who is married to former international rugby player Kenny Logan, also shares the impact reaching the perimenopause has had on her - including taking listeners through her own journey following IVF, and subsequent choice to take HRT. 'I made the decision that I would use some bioidentical hormones, because she [the doctor] explained the risks and what they were, and the benefits and what they were,' she says, noting that it's a very individual decision. 'I felt like "I’m not feeling the best version of me that I can feel right now", and I don’t want to allow myself to slow for no reason.'
Gabby acknowledges that this period of life can really affect women's careers - but believes it shouldn't. 'I think it applies to a lot of women in high power and high-performance jobs, where they suddenly disappear from boards or from being the CEO because of this period in their life that can cause confusion, physically and emotionally and mentally,' she explains. 'So, for me, it’s really important that women keep pushing through and get those top jobs…and it’s not because of what happens in their menopause that they disappear.'
Finally, the busy mum - who also reveals the pressures of supporting her 15-year-old twins, son Reuben and daughter Lois during these strange times - shares how she has been boosting her mental wellbeing in lockdown. 'Wellness is intrinsically tied up with fitness for me,' explains the ex-international rhythmic gymnast. 'I’ve got back into training with a trainer I trained [with] for years [and] I’ve been doing a few sessions with him online. A few HIIT classes, I might do some yoga, go for a run, doing loads of walking - and it’s definitely helping me get through this period.'
